Working while traveling / Travailler en voyageant
I have been self-employed for more than 10 years in the field of graphic design. Traveling has always been very important in my life and I had a long dream of combining work and travel. I finally realized this desire this year by going on a long journey of five and a half months. Obviously I could not have done this without the agreement and the open-mindedness of my clients.
Je suis travailleur autonome depuis plus de 10 ans dans le domaine du design graphique. Le voyage a toujours été très important dans ma vie et je rêvais depuis longtemps de combiner travail et voyage. J'ai finalement concrétisé ce désir cette année en partant pour un long voyage de cinq mois et demi. Évidemment je n'aurais pas pu faire cela sans l'accord et la grande ouverture d'esprit de mes clients.
To make it all possible, I had to buy a little more computer equipment than I thought. I first had to swap my big Imac 27 inches for a Laptop 15 inches, which required a lot of adaptation at first. I then bought three external hard drives with backup system. I also took a "power bar surge protector", which many do not think to take away, but it governs the uneven flow of electricity that is a problem in many countries which, in the long run, causes major break of computer equipment. I even had to buy a big electricity transformer, because Peru runs on 220volt, which was hard to find! Not to mention the two phone charging batteries and a variety of wires and extensions of all kinds. While not neglecting an excellent roaming phone plan with a ton of GB.
Pour rendre le tout réalisable, j'ai dû acheter un peu plus d'équipement informatique que je pensais. J'ai tout d'abord dû troquer mon gros Imac 27 pouces pour un Laptop 15p, ce qui me demanda beaucoup d'adaptation au début. J'ai ensuite acheté trois disques durs externes avec système de backup. J'ai aussi emporté une "power bar surge protector", ce que plusieurs ne pensent pas à emporter, mais elle régie le flux d'électricité inégal qui est un problème dans plusieurs pays ce qui, à la longue, cause des bris majeurs aux matériels informatiques. J'ai même dû acheter un gros transformateur, car le Pérou fonctionne sur du 220volt, qui fut dur à trouver! Sans parler des deux batteries de recharge de téléphone ainsi qu'une panoplie de fils et d'extensions en tout genre. Tout en ne négligeant pas un excellant plan de téléphone en itinérance avec une tonne de Gig.
My initial plan was to work 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday. My schedule changed quickly, according to our destinations as well as according to the work that was asked of me. So I quickly took a much more organic and flexible work pace.
Mon plan initial était de travailler 4 heure par jour du lundi au vendredi. Mon horaire a vite changé, selon nos destinations ainsi que selon le travail qui m'était demandé. J'ai donc rapidement pris un rythme de travail beaucoup plus organique et flexible.
Here is an anecdote that made me smile. We were in Honduras in a hotel by the sea. There was only internet in the lobby, so I was there every day to work a few hours. A traveler who was staying at the same hotel used to greet me. After a few days, she comes to tell me in a very sad tone: "Poor you, you still work today" and me to answer her : "yes, but look where I am .... I'm traveling for five months and you only two weeks. You should not be sad for me, but rather find me very lucky! "
Voici une anecdote qui m'a fait sourire. Nous étions au Honduras dans un hôtel sur le bord de la mer. Il y avait seulement de l'internet dans le hall d'entrée, j'y étais donc tous les jours pour y travailler quelques heures. Une voyageuse qui séjournait au même hôtel avait l'habitude de me saluer. Après quelques jours, elle vient me dire d'un ton très triste : « Pauvre toi, tu travailles encore aujourd'hui » et moi de lui répondre : « oui, mais regarde où je suis.... Moi je voyage durant cinq mois et toi seulement deux semaines. Tu ne devrais pas être triste pour moi, mais plutôt me trouver très chanceuse! »
In conclusion, I really enjoyed my work experience and I recommend it to everyone that their work allows it. I felt a great freedom and I was privileged to be able to work in this way.
En conclusion, j'ai vraiment aimé mon expérience de travail et je le recommande à tous ceux dont le travail le permet. J'ai ressentie une grande liberté et je me trouvais privilégiée de pouvoir travailler ainsi.
